The Wii doesn’t support video or music media, so if you want to view a downloaded movie or mp3, you must watch or listen it on your computer. Fortunately, there is a way to turn every console with connection to the internet into a media station. This works by streaming movies and music from you computer to your console, so you don’t even need to mod your console! Here’s a quick guide for the Xbox360, PS3 and the Wii.
So, what do you need?
1) a console (Xbox360, Wii, PS3, it also seems to works for some handheld devices).
2) Your Wii and PS3 will need a connection to the internet, your Xbox360 will need to be connected to your local network.
3) A computer with some music or videos on it.
4) Winamp Remote (you can get it here, right-click and save).
5) If you are using a Wii, you need to have the Opera browser. If you don’t have it, you can download it from the Wii Shop Channel.
The first steps are universal for every console. You can skip hem if you already have Winamp Remote installed and configured.
- Start the installer and follow the instructions.
- Create an account (you will be asked) and remember your login information.
- Right-click on the Winamp Remote icon in the lower right of you screen and go to configuration
- Now add all the folders that contain media that you want to play from your console and press OK.
- Make sure Winamp Remote is connected! This also means that you have to leave your computer on.
Choose your console:
PS3 / Wii
- Open the browser on the console (for the Wii it’s the Internet Channel, on the PS3 it’s the Internet Browser option)
- Login at http://winamp.orb.com
- Choose Video or Audio
- Go to "Browse Folders" (or any other category)
- Select the song or video, press play, sit down and relax.
- EXTRA: If you are using a Wii, you will probably need to press "1" to let the controls appear.
Xbox 360
- In the 360 Dashboard:
- Go to the Media Tab
- Select Music or Video
- You probably need to select the music/video source. If this is not the case, and the source is not the computer you want to use, you should press "X" (change Music/Video Source) and select the computer you want to use.
- Browse your videos/albums, select the ones you want to listen and enjoy!
- In-game:
- Open your Xbox Guide (the large X in the middle of the controller)
- Go to "select music"
- Select the computer you want to use as source for your music
- Browse the songs, select the ones you want to play and enjoy!
Some Notes
- I’ve noticed that a faster computer will result in a better streaming experience, especially for movies.
- Winamp Remote can make your computer very, very slow if you use it in combination with the Xbox360.
- There is better software to stream media to your Xbox 360 which also enables you to stream pictures.
- You can use the PS3/Wii method to access your home media files when you are not at home and "forgot" to turn off your computer.
- The quality of your streamed videos is somewhat less than the original, but you’ll hardly notice it on a non-HD television.
- Don’t forget to configure your firewalls 😉 this may help if the streaming doesn’t work.

Nice website, I was doing a little net browsing and happened onto your blog, I was wondering if you knew your blog is rendering unusually within the K-mellon browser. I can see everything but the pictures are somehow out of whack. Probably not a big deal since basically nobody utilizes it any longer but I am old school and still run it.
