In this dark time of the year, boredom can hide in every shady corner, so here are 5 games to amuse yourself. Four of them are free, and one costs money, as usual, but I decided to make some of them christmas flavoured (some of them even cozy) with the holidays coming up. Enjoy!
The Time Wasters of December 2008:
Super Smash Brothers Brawl (Paid game for the Wii)
Super Smash Brother Brawl is out for quite some time now, but I thought now was the right moment to put it in the Time Wasters. Unlike Gears of War 2, it’s a game that fits this time of year: a fun game to play with your friends. In my opinion it’s by far the best version of Super Smash Brothers till now. It has a nice story line to clear and lot of extra arcade modes that were in the older versions. If you have a Wii, and if you are a Nintendo fanboy, you should get it.

Hattrick (Browser Based text soccer RPG)
Hattrick is probably one of the most popular online text RPG’s. You can manage your own soccer team, and try to get to the first devision. It’s fun for quite some time, but sometimes I really think that you must be a soccer fan to play it, otherwise it can be a bit boring… but nevertheless it’s a great time waster, spending two times one hour in the week should be enough. However, you should notice that if you want to play, you should ask for a team ASAP, because there’s a long waiting line. It can take up to a month to get a team…

Santa Balls (Shockwave Game)
For the real christmas freaks out there: A christmas version of Bejeweled. It’s fun for some time, but you must be a real hardcore Bejeweled player to be able to play this for a long time. As a small bonus: the little elf on the background is quite irritating, so you should disable the sound.

Command & Conquer Gold (Free to Play RTS)
COMMAND & CONQUER ROCKS! I really love these strategy games, so I was very glad they brought out the Command and Conquer Gold edition as a free download. I’m still stuck in the GDI campaign, so I can tell you it’s not as easy as modern games, but the gameplay is still great. It’s not really a christmas game, but the RTS freaks out there will probably enjoy it. The download consists of 2 ISO’s, so the best way to play it is probably to use deamon tools (see our gaming without discs guide). It runs on every 32bit windows, but you’ll need to download a patch and follow some instructions to get it working on windows Vista.

SuperTuxKart (Open Source Game)
Like the name suggests, it’s a Mario Kart clone, and it plays quite well. There are some interesting tracks, and you even have a one screen multiplayer for up to 4 persons. There are some addons which I haven’t tried yet, but you can enjoy yourself without them. It’s compatible with Mac OSX, Linux and Windows, and it has pretty low specs.
